Don’t be surprised when money becomes obsolete in our lifetimes

Some very odd things have been happening to me lately.

The other week, I pulled up next to an intersection. I looked over and noticed a man with a sign. We all know those men and we all know those signs. Normally I keep my windows rolled up and act as though I can’t see them.

But for some reason, this time was different. Without even realizing it, I began fishing around in my console for the $20 I keep for emergencies. I handed it over to him, exchanged a polite greeting, and I drove off.

My heart felt lighter. Lighter, I thought wryly, than my wallet. Which, these days, is saying something.

This unbidden generosity has been surfacing in me recently. I’ve been helping out friends with money, picking up the phone more readily, listening for ways I can ease the fear and tension around me. And I’m not the only one. In these unprecedented times, I’ve seen more acts of spontaneous and loving generosity than I can count.

This isn’t some sugar-coated article about how we all just need to hold hands and sing campfire songs. The pain and suffering on our planet is real and intense. Within a few months our entire way of life has changed. Fear, anxiety, grief and hopelessness is weighing like a heavy blanket…
