Visionary Leadership
Reflection Questions to Revitalize Your Work
I have been lucky enough to work under a true visionary. As an employee in that organization, I felt it- the crackle of purpose, the excitement of possibility, the feeling that all of us were going somewhere and doing something extraordinary, together.
This didn’t happen at a well-resourced private company or a start-up full of highly-motivated innovators. I experienced this as a Curriculum Designer for a school district. And if visionary leadership can happen in a school district, it can happen anywhere.*
*(I am not saying this to be snarky. In a talk with Vail Symposium I drew from the work of Frederic Laloux to demonstrate the ways humans organize according to their levels of consciousness. According to his work, government organizations generally lag two or three tiers behind the cutting edge of conscious organizing. See Reinventing Organizations for more information, or my podcast When the Heart Leads).
When it came to working for a visionary, there was an ineffable magic about it, yes, but there were also clear and concrete practices that this leader committed to that allowed his vision to become actualized on a day-to-day basis. If you are a leader with a vision, and you’re looking to get more traction for it, consider these simple reflection questions.
